Tech Tips: Give with Heart, But Stay Smart
Online fundraisers can make a real difference—but scammers know that generosity is an easy target. Before you click “donate,” follow these tips to make sure your money goes where it should.
1. Stick to Trusted Platforms
Use sites like GoFundMe, Givebutter, or Mightycause
Donate through official nonprofit websites, not random links
2. Verify Before You Give
Search the fundraiser’s name online to see if it’s legit
Use Charity Navigator or GuideStar to check organizations
Reverse image search fundraiser photos to spot stolen pictures
3. Watch for Red Flags
🚫 Urgent pressure to donate immediately🚫 No clear details about who’s running it🚫 Misspelled links or bad grammar🚫 Requests for gift cards, wire transfers, or cash apps
4. Donate Safely
Use credit cards or PayPal for extra protection
Avoid clicking links from texts or emails—type the site’s address directly into your browser
Keep a record of your donation in case you need to dispute it
